Implications

17/08/2012

Alright, I’m going to tell you three things that are true and one thing that isn’t.  I can’t tell you which is which – it’s up to you to decide.

You’re in a unique position, perhaps a lucky one.  It’s not likely you’ll ever get your memory back.

But you were the face of this endeavour, and the brains and heart too.  The people trust you, and they will follow you.  Whatever you decide, and believe, that will become the truth of the matter.

You cannot change what happened, but you can decide the implications, the repercussions, the light in which it’s to be cast.  History.

You alone can choose the truth, and you must decide before you leave this room.

Alright.

One.  It had to be done.  We all knew for a long time that there was no alternative.  This was the only course of action, and you were the one who made it happen.  You turned the desperate hopes into a reality – yes, you.

I know you’re confused, but you weren’t then.  No.  Two.  We did this for the people.  For the future. The short term consequences are…regrettable.  But we did not do this for the present, and not for any selfish gain.  We did this to survive.  Three.  No one, not even you, had any idea of the cost when we embarked on this course of action.

Millions of lives are lost and there’s no way you could have foreseen it, and nothing you could have done to prevent it.

Four.

You tried to stop it.

You didn’t want your name on it, but it was too late.  You squirmed for too long, and it was done.  In your name and the names of every person living and every person sacrificed.

Alright.

I’ll give you some time.  Remember, you decide whatever you think you can live with.  You might not know who you are right now, but you must choose what kind of a person you want to be from this moment on, and more importantly, what kind of a world you want to live in.  I will close the door.
